The Charlotte Department of Transportation (CDOT) has used data to decipher the top five most hazardous crossings in Charlotte. The data was assessed by tallying the number of car collisions in a particular area, divided by the count of vehicles that moved through the studied intersection during a particular period of time.
For example, Mecklenburg County holds a traditional city landmark. Unfortunately, Mom’s Treasures, the well-known furniture business, is positioned on the corner of one of the most hazardous crossroads in the county. The owner of the family-owned establishment notes that he has seen several crashes – some fatal – over the years. Vehicles roll casually out of the parking lot, nearly knocking down workers.
The intersection is the fourth most hazardous crossing in the area. Number five, however, is where East 4th Street links to Kings Drive. The problem is that motorists fail to watch out for pedestrians in this area, and drivers do not pay attention to car blinkers.
The third location on the list is 9th Street at North College. Again, motorists fail to acknowledge pedestrians. Furthermore, there tends to be an abundance of texting drivers in this area. Also, 8th Street is second on the list, which is just a few paces away.
So what is the worst intersection in the area? According to CDOT documents, it is the crossing of Harrisburg Road and Cambridge Commons Drive. The issue is that left handed turns out of a surrounding lot has resulted in a number of motor vehicle accidents. In fact, the problem was so bad that the CDOT recently installed a roundabout. Since then, the count of collisions in the area has declined.
Car accidents are a scary thing, but many are preventable. If you find yourself driving through these accident-prone areas, take the time to slow down and look around. Pedestrians could be hidden in a blind spot, and cars may fail to signal. For this reason, it helps to be an alert and proactive driver.
On the other hand, you can only do so much. Even if you are cautious on the roads, this does not mean other vehicles will be as well. If you become a victim of a car accident – in these spots or other areas of the city – you may consider legal assistance. Many collisions are the result of negligent, inattentive motorists. If someone negligently harms you, you may be entitled to compensation, including recovery for medical expenses, lost wages and pain and suffering. To learn more, contact a professional.
