New Helmet-Mounted Device Improves Motorcycle Visibility

In the aftermath of a serious or fatal motorcycle accident, it’s not uncommon to hear the motorist otherwise responsible for the crash tell law enforcement officials that they didn’t even see the bike prior to the collision.

Recognizing just how often these fatal rear-end collisions occur, many motorcyclists have employed various devices to try to improve their visibility to motorists from reflective tape to aftermarket taillights.

While these efforts have certainly helped, the problem hasn’t gone away, as motorcyclists continue to suffer serious personal injuries — or worse — thanks to the actions of inattentive motorists.

Real help may finally be here, however, thanks to a new item that is designed to add the functional equivalent of a car’s third brake light to a motorcycle helmet.

The device in question is an adhesive strip of eight LED lights that can be secured to the back of a motorcycle helmet and which functions just like a third brake light informing motorists — especially in close traffic — when the motorcycle’s brakes have been activated.

As if this wasn’t remarkable enough, the LED light strip also serves as an extra signal to inform motorists of lane changes and turns.

The LED light strip is linked to the motorcycle’s existing controls (brakes, blinkers, etc.) via a wireless transmitter that is installed on the bike and connected to its internal wiring. As for its power source, the light strip is equipped with a built-in battery that can be recharged via an included USB charger.

While some may be potentially wary of the price and the installation involved with the LED light strip, it actually retails for close to $100 and is designed to be do-it-yourself.

It’s certainly encouraging to see more significant advancements being made in the area of motorcycle safety. Here’s hoping that motorcyclists here in North Carolina — where helmet use is mandatory — choose to make this part of their equipment.

If a motorcycle accident caused by a distracted driver has caused your family unimaginable loss, consider speaking with a dedicated legal professional as soon as possible to learn more about your options for seeking justice and peace of mind.
